A chair that cannot be pulled in properly forces you to work at arm’s length all day, and it is one of the most common and least recognised setup faults.
Why It Matters
If the chair stops short, you sit further from the keyboard and reach forward to type.
Reaching forward means the arms are unsupported and held out in front of the body, which loads the shoulders and neck continuously. It also pulls you off the backrest, so the lumbar support does nothing.
Almost every complaint of shoulder tension in a home office traces back to reaching.
What Stops the Chair
- Fixed armrests hitting the desk edge, by a wide margin the commonest cause
- A desk apron or drawer box hanging low under the top
- A modesty panel across the back of a desk
- A cable tray or a power strip mounted underneath
- A cross-brace between desk legs at knee height
- The desk itself being against a wall with no depth
Chairs with flip-up or fully adjustable arms, of the kind at stellamia.org, solve the most common case directly, since the arms fold out of the way rather than being removed.
Measure the Clearance
The number to check before buying a chair. Floor to the underside of the desk, and floor to the top of the armrests at their lowest setting.
The second must be less than the first, with a little margin. Where a listing does not state armrest height, that omission is worth asking about.
Removing Armrests Is Reasonable
The unglamorous fix that works. Most armrests unbolt from underneath in a couple of minutes.
A chair without arms that reaches the desk is better than a chair with arms that does not, because reaching all day is worse than unsupported arms.
Keep the bolts in case you change desk.
Knee Clearance
Separate from the chair. There should be room to cross your legs and change position without hitting the underside.
Cable trays and power strips mounted under a desk are the usual culprits, and moving them back a few inches costs nothing.
Desk Depth
A shallow desk means the screen is too close as well as the chair being blocked.
Roughly an arm’s length to the screen is the target, which needs real depth.
Check Before Ordering
Two measurements prevent this entirely.
Then Sit Back
The whole point of getting the chair in.
